Businesses still fret over crime despite a 35% drop

Although statistics indicate crime in South Africa has dropped 35%, this has failed to ease the fears of many business owners who are still worried about the scourge.

According to Grant Thornton’s 2011 International Business Report which looks at business owners’ perceptions of crime, many business owners believe crime to be one of the major risks they face.

The report says that 50% of businesses in the country have been directly affected by crime over the last year.

“When business owners were asked how crime had impacted on their business operations, they reported an 48% increase in the cost of security and a 20% decrease in staff motivation, and said these were the two most important factors,” said Louise Pharo, head of Santam Commercial.
