Crime rate low on Durban beaches

Durban - High police visibility was instrumental in achieving the low crime rate recorded in Durban during the 2011/2012 holiday period, eThekwini metro police said on Monday.

"As most people took time out to rest during the holidays, our law enforcement officers were out in full force to ensure that the festive season was an enjoyable one for all who visited our shores," spokesperson Eugene Msomi said.

Municipal spokesperson Vuyo Gwala said that during the last weekend of the holiday, central beaches recorded about 145 000 visitors, with 22 000 at northern beaches and 28 661 at southern beaches.

"Two arrests were made at the beachfront for theft of a bag and it was recovered," Gwala said

A total of 126 rescues were carried out at all beaches and 202 people were given first aid.

"No drowning incident was reported. Two hundred and eight children who were separated from their parents were reunited with their families," she said.

An estimated 14 898 bags of litter were collected around the beaches.
