Crime stats to be released

Johannesburg - South Africa's crime statistics for the last financial year will be released this week, the ministry of police said on Monday.

"Government releases these statistics once a year, primarily to provide the public with an indication of the crime situation in the country," spokesperson Zweli Mnisi said.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa would present the report in Pretoria on Thursday.

The figures were drawn from the period between April 1 last year and March 31 this year.

Deputy Police Minister Maggie Sotyu, national police chief General Bheki Cele and public safety MECs would attend. Representatives from Business Against Crime, community policing forums and other crime-fighting organisations had been invited.
