Thief caught on camera stealing iPad from security conference

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) – Studies show more than 60 percent of Americans support the use of video surveillance as a means of deterring crime in public areas.

But hundreds of cameras at the International Security Conference in Las Vegas didn't stop one thief from committing an unbelievable crime.

The security video shows it from all different angles.

The man can be seen walking up to the Advanced Technology booth. Wearing a San Diego Charges shirt, he looks to see if the coast is clear. He then pockets the company's demo iPad.

At the International Security Conference, hundreds of state-of-the-art cameras, sensors, and monitoring systems are on display. So how did this thief miss not only one but 30 cameras watching his every move?

"Every booth in the entire show has cameras, and their neighbors have cameras, and the facility has cameras," says Beth Blake, PRISC Events. "And they all monitor and video what's going on in the show."

The thief and his friend were also able to dupe the expo check-in counter; police say they were walking around the conference with fake badges.

"I don't even know if they knew what show they were at," says Duncan Havlin, Advanced Technology. "Obviously not. They were a little clueless."

They were maybe even a little clueless about the advancements in the security industry: The International Security Conference boasts the "best of the best" in technology all under one roof.

"It reminded me of the show ‘America's Dumbest Criminals,'" Havlin jokes. "I don' t know what they were thinking."

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, along with security from the conference, is using images taken from the conference of the two people involved to investigate the crime.
