Increase in crime prevention allocation welcomed: BACSA

The 6,3 percent increase in allocation to make SA’s communities safer, announced in the 2011 Budget speech, was welcomed by Business Against Crime SA (BACSA) on Thursday.

JOHANNESBURG - The 6,3 percent increase in allocation to make SA’s communities safer, announced in the 2011 Budget speech, was welcomed by Business Against Crime SA (BACSA) on Thursday.

“We commend the continued prioritisation of public order and safety functions and the 6,3 percent increase in allocation to R91 billion for 2011/2012,” said CEO Graham Wright.

“In particular, we believe the R12,8 billion allocated to the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster will have an extraordinary effect on the concerted fight against crime and corruption in this country.”

He also lauded the announcement that R2,1 billion has been set aside to increase police personnel by 12,000 “which will enhance police visibility and other specialist functions”.

BACSA commended the allocation towards upgrading information technology and the construction of courts as well as the prioritisation of economic growth and development “especially the need to reduce unemployment, which will also contribute to the reduction of crime in the country”.
